Fund Raisers

Despite living in Canada, the home of “universal health care”, getting a lung transplant is an extremely expensive proposition. The transplant surgery will be covered. But before the hospital will even put him on the list, he needs to show he has $9,000 for a 3 month course of an anti-viral drug called valganciclovir (Valcyte) and there is a chance he will need to take it for longer. There is a long list of other drugs that he “may or may not need” most of which are not covered. The anti-rejection drugs he will require for the rest of his life are thankfully covered. To help offset the cost of these drugs, relocating to Toronto, and portable oxygen, we are organizing a number of fund raising events.

Donations

Tax deductable donations can be made through the Nova Scotia Lung Association by writing “Ed MacDonald Fund” in the memo field of your cheque. You can also donate online by selecting the Transplant Fund in the online form as indicated in these instructions sent to us on November 14, 2006:

“When making donations online, you can select the Transplant Fund and the funds will be credited to the MacDonald fund. Right now, we only have 1 fund on the go so there is no chance of confusion. Should another fund be created, we will have to work something else out. However, for now, please let your friends know that can make the donations online and the MacDonald fund will be credited.”
– Jeanette Paynter, Director of Finance & Administration

We have had some individuals ask if they send a donation through the NS Lung Association, how can they make sure it gets to Dad. It would be nice if they were set up with a convienient system for auditing, but instead they choose to spend their money on things like research which is fine by us. However what you can do is send us the information and we can monitor the balance in the fund to ensure it shows up. You can either send an email, or if you prefer to remain anonymous, you can ask the Lung association for a receipt and send us a photocopy with your name blocked out.

Lotto Bingo

Our second lotto bingo was a success with a cash prize of $375.00 for both the winner and for Tappy’s fund.  Congratulations Lorna C and thank you to everyone who participated.Â
