Hockey Night in Hogtown

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 by Tappy

Georgie and I had the pleasure of seeing an NHL game the other night. (Nov 27th) And it happened to be a Toronto-Montreal game with as much excitement as you could ever ask for.

Georgie’s nephew’s partner Denise offered us the tickets to the game but we weren’t sure whether we could use them. I would have to haul four oxygen bottles with us and knew we couldn’t take those to our seat.

Georgie called the Air Canada Center a few days before the game to explain the situation and the man she talked to immediately went into action. He exchanged our seats for ones in another section where we could easily take our oxygen trolley with us. He also got us a great parking spot in the building where we wouldn’t have to walk far.

From the time we entered the building the staff was just great and went out of their way to help us. Sound familiar?

And the game could not have been scripted better. Neither team was ever more than a single goal ahead and Toronto tied it with just 16 seconds remaining. That sent it into a sudden death overtime and then a shootout. It was quite exciting. Despite the fact Toronto didn’t win, it was a hell of a game.

A Year Later

Well Saturday past it was a year since we left home.  As we pulled out of our driveway, after shedding a lot of tears, we thought it would be six to eight months before we would see home again.  We left Jean Marie crying in the driveway and headed for Halifax for our final night (for a while) with the boys and their families.  We had a great evening and headed out the following morning after more hugs and tears.
We arrived in Cambridge on Sunday afternoon at my Brother and Sister-in-law’s home where we told we could stay as long as need be.   I bet they weren’t thinking at that time that it would be this long.
The 401 proved to be too much for us three to four times a week so we got an apartment in TO.   For six weeks we had a two-bedroom apartment while we waited for our bachelor pad to be ready.  But since January 15th, we’ve been in an apartment where the bedroom, living room, dinning room and den are all one.  But hey, a lot less housework.
We are very fortunate as far as visitors this year.  Junior MacAskill and his wife Joanne came to visit us shortly after we arrived.  Then Nancy Bona made a surprise visit.  Our three children and their families were here between June and July except Ryan and Hailey but we talk to them a lot on the phone.   Jackie Wall arrived late in July as well as Angus MacAskill.  Sonny and Betty James dropped in on their Summer tour.
Gordie, Shirley and Scott MacLean were here for Thanksgiving and Ed reunited with a childhood friend, John Nimchuk.  And we just learned that Sharon and Henry Cameron, our son Mike’s in-laws, and our very good friends; are arriving early next month.  Can’t wait.
So although a year has passed, we still feel blessed because we’ve met a lot of people who turned out to be really good friends.   We live in a pretty good city and we do have family here. Others aren’t so lucky.  Hope to see you all real soon.
