Empty Nest

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 by Tappy

It all went by too quickly.  I’m talking about the visits with our children and their families this Summer.  Mike , Lisa, Amber and Jacob left this morning for their home in Cole Harbour.  Mike was the last of our three children to visit.  Ed and the family were here a few weeks ago and Jean Marie and Kyle were here in June.  The only Grandchild we did not get to see was Ryan.  (but the Summer is not over yet, who knows).

Mike and Lisa and the kids did all the usual attractions: Canada’s Wonderland, Marineland, The Toronto Zoo and the science center.  Eight year old  Jacob can’t find rides big enough or fast enough so naturally, he enjoyed Canada’s Wonderland best of all.  Amber loves animals and rides that are a little less daring so her favorite place was the zoo.

Mike and the family were also able to take advantage of a vacant apartment in the same building and on the same floor as Georgie and Me.  The convenience of this was extraordinary.  It meant they could visit with us until bedtime and not worry about packing up the car and kids  and  heading off to a hotel.  And  in the mornings they were with us for breakfast.  It just meant we were able to spend every precious minute with them.

On another note………….one of our friends in the pre-transplant program received his new Lung on the weekend.   Ross Thomas from St. Phillips Newfoundland, has been on the list since January.   (see  picture  of Ross and Lois in archives “May 8th” on the main blog page).  Congratulations Ross!

I’m optimistic my call will come soon.

Do you have what it takes to kill someone?

My father needs a lung transplant. As complicated a procedure as a lung transplant is, surviving the surgery is not the biggest risk he faces. Unfortunately, and unnecessarily, the biggest hurdle right now is getting a lung and the chance to contribute to the ever climbing success statistics for lung transplant operations.

Visit From Ed, Heather and Kids

Monday, July 9th, 2007 by Tappy

We had a visit last week from our son Ed, wife Heather and their family from Halifax. They drove straight through to get here as soon as possible and start enjoying the warm weather. The weather cooperated for the most part and they were able to take in many of the attractions Southern Ontario has to offer. They did Niagara Falls and visited with Heather’s brother Chris where they did the barbecue thing. They also did Canada’s Wonderland twice, the science Center and the July first fireworks on the lake. The kids loved the pool here at Rosehill and spent some of their time there.

They stayed in an apartment in our building which was great because they were just down the hall from us. Ed Jr. is an early riser and was at our apartment for coffee between 7 and 7:30 every morning. As the kids awoke they wandered down. So everyone got to sleep as long as they liked. By 9 or 10 they were ready to start the day. It was so nice having them in the same building because I was having a pretty bad week and didn’t feel like going anywhere. But I thoroughly enjoyed my mornings and evenings with them.

Our son Mike, wife Lisa and their two kids will be arriving next week and will be staying in the same apartment. Looking forward to it.

Also this week we had a visit from my cousin Don Palmer. Don lives here in TO and teaches part time at Humber College and does some playing on the side. Hadn’t seen him in several years and it was fun to spend the afternoon with him.

We also had a brief visit from Sonny and Betty James from Mira.  Haven’t seen them for far too long.  It was nice having them with us.
